One morning, a nose appears on the table of the barber Jakowlewitsch who recognizes this gruesome object to be the irreplaceable body part of his customer Kowaliow. At the same time, the latter awakes and realizes the tragic absence of his nose. Due to this dramatic prologue, the absurdity of which is emphasized by a grotesque realism, both of the figures, each the alter ego and the mirror of the other, as well the object of Gogol’s powerful social satire, become terribly agitated.
The continuous change of scene determines the dramaturgical idea of the despairing possession and this dramatic loss on different levels. The poetic character of the original text is transformed according to the comic surrealism of a Danijl Charms.
The two protagonists of this tragicomedy come and go: from narrow rooms into the open expanse of the public, from oppressive sleep into a waking state, from the worrying burden of possession to the drama of absence, from memory to premonition.
