Writing for vocal ensemble (with or without electronics)


Description:
The workshop is dedicated to young composers interested in writing for vocal ensemble a cappella (max. 5 voices). Proposals can include live electronics, amplification or tape production. Any special requirements must be discussed with the workshop tutors in advance.

The selected composers will have the opportunity to write a new vocal work (15 minutes maximum) under the supervision of the Artistic Director of the Biennale Musica, Lucia Ronchetti, supported by different tutors.

The Vocal Ensemble Neue Vocalsolisten will perform the new compositions within the Biennale Musica (17-26 September 2021) as world premieres.

The workshop will consist of three different stages. 
The first stage will be dedicated to the conception of the work, the textual treatment and the experimentation of different vocal techniques under the supervision of the tutors. Classes will also focus on traditional and recent vocal techniques, their specific notation and the electronic treatment of the voice.

The subject, the text and the dramaturgy of the selected projects will be the object of an open discussion between the Artistic Director, composers, tutors and members of the vocal ensemble Neue Vocalsolisten.
The composition of the first version of the new pieces will be followed by the second stage of the workshop, which will be concerned on the evaluation of the compositional ideas and their performability. The third stage will be dedicated to the work on the CIMM Studios (La Biennale di Venezia Centre for Computer Music and Multimedia)  for the compositions requiring electronics treatment.

Biennale College Musica team, under the supervision of the Artistic Director, will be in communication with the selected composers throughout the whole process of composition, from April to September 2021 and will also be available for suggestions and revisions of the new scores.

Candidates selection:
Composers selected for admission will be chosen by the Artistic Director after close scrutiny of their CVs and scores.

Registration fee:
Each selected applicant will be required to pay a registration fee in the amount of € 80.00 (VAT included, non-refundable) to be paid exclusively by credit card following the announcement of their acceptance.

Working at site-specific sound installations that include pre-recorded voice material


Description:
The workshop is dedicated to young composers interested in site-specific sound installations.

The selected composers will have the opportunity to create a new site-specific sound installation under the supervision of the Artistic Director of the Biennale Musica, Lucia Ronchetti, supported by different tutors.

The new sound-installation by the selected composers will be presented within the Biennale Musica (17-26 Settembre 2021).

The four selected composers will get the opportunity to create their world premieres in three different stages. The first stage will be aimed at the conception of the project under the supervision of the tutors; in the second stage the selected composers will be given the possibility to work on the CIMM (La Biennale di Venezia Centre for Computer Music and Multimedia) Studios and complete the project; the third stage will focus on the rehearsals and production of the new project.

Biennale College Musica will select a number of suitable locations in the city, as to enable each composer to select his/her preferred location.

The voice material can include any kind of pre-recorded voice files. If new samples are needed, the selected composers can collaborate with the bass Andreas Fischer.

Biennale College Musica team under the supervision of the Artistic Director of the Music Department will be in communication with each composer throughout the whole process of composition, from April to September 2021 and will also be available for suggestions and revisions of the new projects.

Experimental Performance
(turntablism/controllerism and live electronics applied to pre-recorded voice)


Description:
The workshop is open to young experimental performers, DJs/turntablists/controllerists and live electronics performers interested in experimenting with pre-recorded voice.

The selected performers will have the opportunity to realize an experimental performance under the supervision of the Artistic Director of the Biennale Musica, Lucia Ronchetti, supported by  different tutors.

The selected performers will present their works within the Biennale Musica (17-26 September 2021).

The workshop will consist of three different stages. During the workshops the participants will learn techniques connected with the pre-recording voice and the live treatment of the voice.
The first stage will be focused on the conception of the project, under the supervision of the tutors, while the second will be focused on the work in the CIMM (La Biennale di Venezia Centre for Computer Music and Multimedia) Studios; the third stage will be dedicated to the rehearsals and production of the new project.

The voice material can be any kind of pre-recorded voice files. In case new samples are needed, the selected composers can collaborate with Andreas Fischer.

Vocal Ensemble dedicated to contemporary music


Description:
Biennale Musica aims to foster and support a Renaissance of the Italian vocal performance of a cappella vocal ensemble. The selected vocal ensemble will be introduced to the new repertory and the vocal writing developed in the last decades. Different performative vocal styles will be analysed. The Italian tradition of vocal music a cappella and the wide repertory created by Italian composers over the centuries will be the object of different classes held by the tutors.
The selected ensemble will be in residence during 1 week and will prepare a performance of important new vocal works under the supervisions of the tutors.

During Biennale Musica (17 > 26 september 2021) the ensemble will present the result of their work in a concert.
